This being my first write-up, had been thinking all day long for what should I write about, with so many things happening in the world. However, since my id talks bout come backs, I think the best thing to write about is the comeback of a Fallen Hero, a Champion. My first write up, I am dedicating to “FedEx”.
In case you don’t know whom I am talking of, its Roger Federer. By winning the French Open yesterday, 7th June 2009, he has re-written all the history books and has become undoubtedly the best player in the history of the game (Lawn Tennis in case your not a follower).
He had announced himself with becoming the youngest Wimbledon Juniors’ Champion and soon, by beating Sampras in the fourth round of Wimbledon in the year 2001, he was seen as the future of tennis. But no one knew he will be the greatest. I liked him when he beat Sampras in his very first meeting and that too on Sampras’s favorite surface. However, within the next few years, the game in itself had become one man show. And he was nicknamed FedEx.
Well his Express has swapped 14 Grand Slam Titles. However, in the past few years, especially the last one and a half years, there had been questions raised about his greatness, just for the sake of one man, Rafael Nadal. However, for the Champion he is, he cameback and showed, he still has it in him to win a Grand Slam. There is a shere arrogance, attitude of the Champion in his stride when he walks on the Centre Court. He never looks like loosing the game.
Fingers will always point that about his greatness as compared to Sampras, as Roger has been living virtually competition less for many a years now but Sampras had to compete with the likes of Goran, Becker, Agassi, Courier, Stich, etc. However, one cannot deny that he actually made the competition look weak with his mere genius work. He will always be part of the history books as amongst the Greats.
Being just 26 years of age, he has already won 14 Championships. He has another 8 good years ahead of him. I am tipping him to win 25 Grand Slams and wish him the best.
An important thing for me for writing about this great Champion is also to let know people that it’s the sheer determination and hard work one has to put in. Some people invariably stop after becoming Good. However, there is altogether different journey to grow from Good to Great. In words of Jim Collins, Good is the enemy of Great. So, if you think your Good and are satisfied, think again.
Winning is part and parcel of each and every game. You win some, you loose some. Life is just another game and this world is just another opponent. Work hard, be determined, and you’ll make your opponents eat the dust.
